A full house is not the same as a profitable one. If you've received a special-rate offer, work out your net profit per room before you sign up.

Small Hotel OTA Promotions: A Profit-and-Loss Test for Deciding Whether to Join

Weekday vacancies had been dragging on through the off-season when the platform invited you to join a special-rate promotion. Joining seems likely to bring more bookings, but last time, even with every room full, the month-end settlement fell short of what you expected. With no way to judge whether this time would be any different, have you been leaving the proposal open for days without deciding?

๐Ÿ“Š Occupancy and revenue per room are different metrics

Occupancy shows how full your rooms are; revenue per room shows how much each room actually earned you. Discounts can raise occupancy while lowering revenue per room, so you need to look at both metrics together.

Metric

What it shows

What to check after joining

Occupancy

Number of rooms sold

Whether rooms that would have sold anyway went at the discounted rate

Revenue per room

Actual take-home after subtracting costs from the selling price

Whether anything is left after discounts, commission and variable costs

๐Ÿงพ How discounts and commission stack up

A discount lowers the selling price, and commission is charged separately according to the platform's rules. Whether commission is calculated on the pre-discount or post-discount amount, and whether the promotion can be combined with other benefits, may differ by platform, so check the proposal first.

If the final figure barely covers your variable costs, there is little reason to join.

โœ… Checklist for deciding whether to join

  • I've decided whether the goal is to fill off-season vacancies or to gain new exposure

  • The eligible dates are limited to days that normally don't sell well

  • Weekends and peak-season dates that already sell well are excluded

  • The final net profit, with all discounts applied, is at or above the threshold I've set

  • The cancellation and change terms don't conflict with my existing policy

  • I can adjust the period or the number of rooms myself

If new exposure is your goal, there are also channels such as Tripbtoz, an OTA that expands exposure based on video reviews, so compare how each channel gives you visibility beyond discounts.

๐Ÿ“ˆ After joining, compare with the previous period

When the promotion ends, set its occupancy, revenue per room and reviews side by side with a similar period just before it. Keeping a record of the results lets you decide on the next offer based on evidence rather than gut feeling.

When the next offer arrives, make a copy of the table above and fill in the figures. It won't be too late to decide whether to join after that.
